MAKING A HOME Japanese Contemporary Artists in New York

Making a Home: Japanese Contemporary Artists in New York is an exhibition catalogue published by Japan Society in 2007 in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name. Edited by Reiko Tomii and Eric C. Shiner, the book documents the work of thirty-three Japanese artists living and working in New York, ranging from emerging practitioners to internationally recognized figures such as Yoko Ono and Ushio Shinohara. Through essays, artist biographies, and extensive reproductions of artworks, the publication examines how Japanese artists have established creative careers and cultural identities within New York's contemporary art world.

The cover was designed by Hiroki Otsuka, a Japanese artist based in New York whose practice spans drawing, installation, sculpture, and graphic work. Otsuka was also one of the artists featured in the exhibition documented by the catalogue. His cover design reflects the publication's focus on contemporary Japanese artistic activity in New York and contributes to the catalogue's identity as both a scholarly publication and an exhibition object.
